In May 2012, women from Interfaith Vision Foundation Cameroon – a respected civil society group that successfully lobbied for the ratification of the Metta Charter on Widowhood in January 2010, which allows widows to maintain their individual rights – and women from other sectors of Cameroonian society established the WDN Country Chapter to increase the number of women serving in elective office throughout the country.
Since its creation, the Chapter has focused on teaching women the skills needed to take on a more active leadership role in decision-making at all levels of society through the Women’s Leadership School (WLS). During the sessions participants, including political party members, aspiring candidates for the scheduled 2013 legislative elections, lawyers and farmers, identify hurdles to women becoming more active and ways in which they can be addressed. The Chapter will sponsor a total of six WLS across Cameroon in preparation for the 2013 elections.
