Launched in 2009, the Albania Country Chapter’s focuses on raising awareness of the role women play in the decision-making process of local and state governments, increasing women’s leadership opportunities and elevating women’s issues in government.
In 2011, the Chapter was awarded a grant to conduct activities supporting the political participation of women in the May 2011 local elections. The Chapter organized pre-election trainings on campaign skills for women candidates and political party electoral managers. After the elections, the Chapter sought to increase the capacity of newly-elected officials and staff to effectively perform their legislative duties through a Women's Leadership and Political Reform Academy. The Academy trained women mayors, council members and political party members on leadership skills, the electoral code in Albania, anticorruption in a democratic system, constitutionaldemocracy and the family legal code on domestic violence. Lectures and trainers discussed these topics from various academic and practical perspectives; each session highlighting the role of women as leaders on these issues.
