The Ukraine Country Chapter, launched in 2011,focuses on increasing women’s involvement in policy-making positions in government and political parties, and creating awareness of issues effecting women – including gender quotas and women’s rights.
In advance of the October 2012 parliamentary elections, the Chapter launched a gender monitoring project to look at how women participate in Ukraine’s elections processes, as well as to assess voter attitude towards women candidates. Working with Ukraine’s political parties, the Chapter is collecting data on how parties ensure gender balanced representation of candidates. Once completed, the data will be released to create greater awareness of how electoral reforms have impacted women’s participation in the political process. Due to low levels of female representation in elected positions and changes in the nation’s electoral law, the Chapter will utilize the information gathered ultimately bring to the attention of Ukrainian society never before seen data concerning women’s political participation. The Chapter hopes to determine whether the electoral reforms have created more or less opportunities for women in the political spheres.
