An Open Letter-- Free Nadiya Savchenko
Dear Prosecutor General:
In 2006, women around the world joined together to create the Women’s Democracy Network (WDN). WDN is a coalition of women leaders who are dedicated to ensuring women’s equality, inclusion and the protection of their fundamental human rights. Through our legislative and executive actions, we ensure that no voice is left unheard, no injustice is ignored and that the dignity of every member of society is upheld.
To this end we wish to express our outrage over the unjust detention and trial of Nadiya Savchenko, who remains in custody in Russia on trumped up charges of killing two Russian journalists. A pioneering female pilot in the Ukrainian Air Force and a democratically elected official of the Verkhovna Rada, Ms. Savchenko is innocent of the charges filed against her and has been unjustly imprisoned since 2014. During this time, she has been subjected to interrogation and solitary confinement. She has also been forced to undergo a farcical judicial process, during which she has been denied due process, including a fair hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal and the opportunity to introduce evidence of her innocence.
On behalf of the Women’s Democracy Network and our global membership, we unequivocally call on the Russian government to adhere to the principals enshrined in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to drop all criminal charges against Ms. Savchenko and free her from custody. We stand with Ms. Savchenko and will serve as her voice until her freedom is restored.
